History has a funny way of repeating itself, and prophetic leaders know it. Having Milk, the new movie about Harvey Milk’s political career and subsequent assassination, be released just after the Proposition 8 vote in California was a strange irony indeed, as perhaps his greatest legacy was fighting to avert the passage of a ballot initiative preventing gays and lesbians from teaching. Sadly, his history had been lost to many queer activists of today, and this film has brought it back to the mainstream at a particularly important time for LGBT rights and activism.
I haven’t yet been to see the film, but I’ve just gotten word that the earlier documentary “The Times of Harvey Milk” is available in full length for free at Hulu.com. So check out the real story here and see how it stacks up.
