Like any good dyke, I have a thing for sea creatures. The stereotype is more marine mammals, but my ocean love is more global. And one of my many favorites is the Basking Shark, something I didn’t even know about until a whale watch a few years ago. They’re giant filter feeders and their mouths just GAPE near the surface while they soak up the sun. I didn’t know anything about them, really, but was interested to read in Scientific American’s 60 Second Science blog that their wintering grounds, heretofore unknown, have been located. Summers in Cape Cod, winters off the coast of Venezuela? Sign me up.
