French sports weekly L’Équipe Mag recently featured an interview with openly gay Welsh rugby star Gareth Thomas about his coming out process, and a photo spread. Rugby is an incredibly physical sport that makes contact in NFL football look like feather-light touches. I love that this guy defies stereotypes both in his own physical appearance, and by continuing to play a sport where guys touch each other, apparently without a lot of kerfluffle. “I still have maybe two seasons to play, and I intend to give everything. I will not go down in history as a homo who played rugby, but as a great player who was gay.”
Below a video and a photo from the magazine interviews. Why do you think the French are all over this? Just one more reason to be a Francophile.
