The Boston Globe carried a set of photos of birds coated in oil last week, and the AP has a whole series of the impact on various wildlife. My heart breaks with them all but these two – the pelican’s attempt to still be a pelican, the transparent wings with smears of thick goo – make me cry each time. I’ve been making a concerted effort to reduce my fuel consumption and to slow down enough to leave myself to walk and bike whenever possible. And when I feel a little lazy – like this morning – photos like these help me refocus and recommit.
