This weekend is AS220’s Foo Fest, an annual event celebrating art, music, and culture. This year they’re honoring Shepard Fairey, best known for creating Andre the Giant Obey posters as well as the Obama “Hope” image that created so much controversy, with the first AS220 Free Culture Award. This award will be a honor bestowed every other year on two artists, one local and one national, whose work has made a significant contribution to grassroots, participatory culture, freedom of expression and whose art and/or process embodies the organization’s unjuried, uncensored mission. I’m super excited to be attending with my buddy Erock, and then taking a date to our favorite beach where we haven’t been in years and years.

Fairey has created a special image for this event, which is being presented in mural form in Downtown Providence. I love it so much I bought one of the limited edition prints. You can still buy one too and support AS220’s great work with great art.
