My gardening philosophy begins with building strong soil. I am an avid composter, using my kitchen and garden waste to feed the soil and the next round of growth. But my compost never gets hot enough to truly kill off seeds. What does that mean? Well, for one thing, my new shrubs are growing in a field of arugula. I’m thinking about leaving some of it – a ground cover helps protect the soil, and it’s a perfect time to start fall greens.
