Hardly Oranges

There is a saying that I try to remember: You can’t buy oranges at the hardware store. No matter how badly you want them, it’s unreasonable to expect the hardware store to carry them. You can keep going back and looking, but you’re going to be disappointed every time. Even if you tell them you want them to carry oranges, it’s unlikely that they’ll start carrying them. Better to appreciate the vast selection of tools, nails, and screws than to be constantly looking for what isn’t there.

I’m usually pretty good at going to the right store for what I’m looking for. But when the sign says “grocery”, and when the person behind the counter is happy to direct me to the produce aisle, it takes me a while to realize that all the shelves are stocked with hardware.
